Disney Water Parks Enhancing Fun in the Sun

Thinking of a visit to Walt Disney World this spring or summer?

Don’t rule out a stop at the water parks to cool off.

In 2019, both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon will feature thrilling experiences as well as exclusive food and beverage options you can’t get anywhere else at Disney.

Items like the Sand Pail Sundae at Typhoon Lagoon and the Key Lime Pie on a stick at Blizzard Beach are sure to be a big hit under the hot Florida sun.

Disney Water Parks General Manager Mark Dukes told TravelPulse there are several new things for guests this year.

“We’ve got some exciting things going on with our cabanas we’ll be able to share in the next couple months, but we’re adding eleven new cabanas to Typhoon Lagoon between now and mid-June. We should have the last one of them open in June,” Dukes said.

The newly unveiled, limited time Splash Pack offer should also grab guests’ attention.

“It allows the guests to bundle some experiences, so they get a beach towel – one of our merchandise beach towels,” Dukes said. “So, it can be a Little Mermaid, it could be Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Toy Story, Mickey and Minnie. They get the refillable drink mugs, and then they get a lunch or dinner option with that as well. So, we’re bundling that for $44, which is about a 20 percent discount off what they would pay regularly.”

It’s a test phase for Disney available now through May 4, so stay tuned to see if it gets extended into the summer season.

Additionally, Disney is bringing back and expanding on H2O Glow at Typhoon Lagoon.

“It was so well received last year that we’re adding nine more events, and we’re actually expanding it an hour on the front end,” Dukes said.

H2O Glow will stick with the same ‘Party-Saurus Rex’ theme as last year, with Buzz, Woody and Jessie returning, pairing perfectly with the new Toy Story movie slated to release this year.

As the sun goes down, the party lights come up and a DJ will play tunes as a limited number of guests play, dance, eat and drink the night away.

The cap on how many visitors enter the park for the special event allows for short to no wait times on the rides. And you get the bonus of riding water slides at night.

For those who have yet to visit Blizzard Beach or Typhon Lagoon, the immersive experience is one you won’t forget.

“All of our rides have deep theming to them,” Dukes said. “You know, it’s not just a big plastic ride on a tower. Our rides are embedded into our story. Everything you see from the shipwrecked boats to the merchandise shop and food beverage locations all have deep theming on them as well. So, they’re just a great experience and a little different than what you might find in a water park back home.”

Plus, the majority of the rides at both parks don’t have a height requirement so the whole family can join in on the fun.

Home to the longest lazy river in the country, Blizzard Beach is an ideal place for relaxation with perfectly shaded cabanas but also plenty of beach lounge space to catch a tan. Plus, it’s perfect for families with kids of any age thanks to the two separate areas just for children. You can also set your emotions on edge if you ride Summit Plummet – the 120-foot tall free-fall body slide.

Typhoon Lagoon also packs plenty of thrills with rides like Crush ‘n’ Gusher and Miss Adventure Falls.

However, the real showstopper is the wave pool. Typhoon Lagoon features the only surf-able wave pool in the United States.

Around 10-12 guests will go out to surf school in the morning before park the opens to everyone. Disney partners with professional instructors here, with one instructor teaching before anyone enters the water and then two instructors in the water with the students, helping guide them to paddle and stand up to surf the waves.

It’s $165 for the class and guests will have two and a half hours of surf time. Riders must be eight years or older to participate in the surf school.

“The beautiful thing about our wave pool is that it’s the same wave one after another, so it’s consistent. If you were to go to the beach you could wait an hour for your next great wave but this one comes in the next three to five minutes,” Dukes said.

Those waves can reach up to six feet high and also break from three different directions, giving surfers plenty of ways to practice their skills. Even pros come out and rent the space for special events because the waves are always consistent.

Another area Disney continues to enhance is through food and targeting millennials.

On targeting those young adults, Dukes said “there’s an opportunity to ride some really thrilling rides and relax when you want to relax. There are great bars, very talented bartenders, fun drinks, amazing food. It’s not the typical hamburgers and hot dogs you find at across the country. It’s a really great menu with some fun flavor explosions and fun drinks.”

Frozen drinks and cool treats also make for great Instagram pictures.

“I’m very proud of our culinary staff,” Dukes said. “We’ve changed menus at both of the parks. We’ve really focused on creating some healthy options for our guests, but even our regular fun food is not what you experience most water parks. It’s above and beyond. And I’m really excited about what they put together.”

Both parks feature gluten-free and vegetarian offerings for meals as well. This includes unique flatbread pizza that goes beyond the traditional pepperoni. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new!

But if you really want a burger and fries, Disney comes through with incredible flavors in the Blizzard Burger that features a scrumptious “ham jam” on a pretzel bun. And you can’t go wrong with the Cuban Burger at Typhoon Lagoon either.

Another area of fun for millennials is Hammerhead Fred’s bar at Typhoon Lagoon. It features live entertainment and will become an adult’s only area at certain times during the year, making it a terrific escape for the millennials without kids.

The millennials who do have kids have plenty of options for fun in the sun for themselves and their children.

As for characters at the parks during the day, you’ll find Lilo and Stich at Typhoon Lagoon and Goofy at Blizzard Beach. However, there could be surprises in the future.

“We’re always looking to see based on the popularity of the movies at the time what we’re going to do, if we can bring some additional characters in or change them up,” Dukes said.

What are your favorite destinations?

Italy, definitely, is one of my favorite destinations. I met my husband in Italy. I love Italian food—I love pasta, pizza. It’s such a beautiful, special place.

What are some must-do activities in Italy?

Coffee. I have a weakness for Italian coffee. You can get an excellent cup of coffee anywhere there.

They have amazing pottery and ceramics, which I always come back with bundles of. All of my plateware and bowls, I bought in Ravello.

Which Italian city is best for shopping?

I love Rome. It has one of my favorite shops, CIR, in the Piazza Barberini. It has Incredible embroidered linens, tablecloths and children’s clothing. It’s very special. The craftsmanship is impeccable.

Favorite place for an amazing view?

The Italian coast is pretty incredible. Ravello, Positano and that view looking out is hard to beat.

What was your most memorable trip?

Getting in engaged in Lake Como in a little small boat, in the middle of the water. And then we road tripped to Rome, where we met. We had the most fabulous weekend.

What are your favorite hotels?

There are so many. I love the Hotel Plaza Athénée Paris. I just love how it smells when you walk in. I have been staying there since I was a little girl, and I love the location and the rooms — it’s just amazing.

But actually, during my last trip [to Paris], I stayed in Saint Germain — I’d never stayed in that part of town — at Hotel Lutetia. I loved it. There was a just different energy over there — very chic, Parisian, boutique. Le Bon Marché is within walking distance from the hotel.

I like to get out of my comfort zone sometimes and try new things.

Where are you traveling to next?

I’m going to Doha. I’ve never been. That’s exciting. I’m seeing some friends, and there’s the FTA [Fashion Trust Arabia] awards and the big [Jean Nouvel-designed National Museum of Qatar] opening. I’m going to get some good sightseeing in and explore a little bit.

Are there any places on your travel wish list?

I really want to go to Bali. I’ve heard so many wonderful things and seen so many photos, but I’ve never been.

What do you pack on your carry-on?

I always pack a blanket and an eye mask from this brand it I found online. It’s called Mindfold, and there’s foam on the side so it’s completely blackout.

Dr. Barbara Sturm hyaluronic ampoules. It’s hyaluronic acid in these tubes that you crack open, and they keep you hydrated the whole flight.

Most of the pieces in your new collection are inspired by beachy destinations. Do beaches top your itinerary when you travel?

I like to do a little of everything. Eating is always a priority, so before I travel somewhere, I’m getting tips from friends about the best restaurants. I love visiting the local museums. I love local flea markets; I’m decorating a new house so I’m constantly looking for new additions.

I love shopping. In Positano and Capri, there are so many of these stalls. I’ve picked up some incredible pictures. In St. Tropez, there are local artisans selling things like really cool homemade jewelry. Fun things.

Which pieces from the new collection do you wear most?

I love the Portofino piece because there are so many different ways to wear it. You can wear it as a dress. The other day in New York it was cold, so I wore it as a tunic with jeans. You also can wear it as a cover-up.

And then I’ve also been wearing the Montauk dress — that’s the one with the anchors.

And the Formentera kimono, I love also. I love a good print. It adds a fun splash of color to any outfit.

What other projects are you working on?

I’m launching shoes with French Sole this fall, which is really exciting. I’ve designed clothing, handbags, jewelry, cosmetics, but I’ve never done footwear.

And when anyone ever asks me, “What’s your go-to outfit?,” it’s always skinny jeans, a blazer and ballet flats. I wear ballet flats every single day. I think they’re practical, they’re chic, they’re comfortable. So, my French Sole collaboration will have a lot of loafers and ballet flats.

And I love French Sole. I’ve been shopping at this store on the Upper East Side since I was in high school.

Looking for more inspiration to add to you Hawaii bucket list?  Me too! And I have always felt that you can make almost any trip affordable.  We went to Iceland after everyone was complaining about how expensive it was, it wasn’t for us.  We brought granola bars and fruit to eat, made sure our hotel had free parking, free wifi, and most importantly free breakfast.

The Seven Sacred Pools are one of the most popular attractions in Maui.  This beautiful park has pools for swimming and waterfalls.  Even though it is prohibited, you will often see people jumping down the waterfalls.

If you have a chance to go, make sure to get there as early as possible as it can get quite crowded later in the day.

Drive the Road to Hana

You will probably feel like you’re about to die during every one of the 600 hairpin turns on the Hana Highway. However, you won’t regret the awesome photo ops—or the dinner waiting for you at Mama’s Fish House once you arrive. How many miles is the road to Hana?

Just over 64, but you’ll have plenty of interesting stops along the way.

Check out the Waikamoi Nature Trail, Upper Waikani Falls, Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach in Maui and the incredible area of Haiku-Pauwela.

Am I the only one that had no idea these trees even existed?  Rainbow tree bark on the Eucalyptus trees!  The various colors form due to the outer layer of the tree continually peeling away and changing colors.

Most people are surprised to learn that Hawaii features some exquisitely beautiful red sand beaches.  Kaihalulu Beach in Hana, Hawaii is one place where you can observe this phenomenon, but be prepared for a decent hike to uncover this gem.

This is one of the best beaches in Hawaii but it can be a little tricky to get to as the trail is pretty steep.  Make sure if you go you bring proper shoes and take extra caution if it is wet or raining.

Also worth noting is that due to the secluded nature of this little piece of paradise, Kaihalulu is known unofficially as a clothing-optional beach.  So don’t be surprised if you end up seeing some things you weren’t quite prepared for.

If you take Pipiwai Trail on the Road to Hana, you’ll end up at Waimoku falls. A long hike of a few hours will bring you to a thundering sheet of water cascading down a sheer volcanic rock face. Stunning!

Some entrepreneurs believe travel to be nice but unnecessary. Or, a waste of their time, when they could be in their office, nurturing leads or making sales calls. The other half knows that it’s important, but don’t feel like it could benefit them or their business, even if it is a working vacation.

I’ve been traveling around the world for over 20 years, both for business and personal reasons, and I’m 100 percent positive that traveling has made me a better person and businessmen in numerous ways. So, to help you see what so many of us traveling entrepreneurs already know, I’ve gathered a few reasons why traveling alone or with colleagues should be one of your top priorities in your business.

1. It prevents burnout.

Burnout is one of the worst things that can happen to an entrepreneur. When you’re constantly working with no end in sight, the only thing you can and will see is burnout. That’s why you need a break from work. And I don’t mean leaving your office desk to go home and work in your home office.

To prevent workplace burnout, you need to travel. It can help you decompress and take your mind off your business, even if it’s only for a few days. Sure, traveling has its own set of problems, but once again, it helps you focus on something other than your business. When you return from your travels, you’ll be using your brain at full capacity and feeling more relaxed.

2. It can inspire you.

When you’re stuck at your desk all day, you’re likely not learning new things or analyzing different perspectives. Thus, your creative muscles aren’t stimulated, so you feel like there’s nothing more to add. But how can you know that if you’re not going places and experiencing life?

Traveling to foreign countries helps you recharge your creative energy. You’ll notice the way people interact, their values, and how they do certain things. All these factors combined might lead to you launching a new product that helps to solve a problem for your customers that you wasn’t aware of before. Or, you might find a different perspective on a problem you’re facing in your business.

You’d be surprised what connection your brain can make when you travel to other cultures, and how those connections might be the catalyst to help propel your business forward.

Being an entrepreneur means constantly being thrown out of your comfort zone and having to do things that you would prefer not to so your business doesn’t fail. That means you need to always be able to adapt to the changes that present themselves to you. Travel is one way to push your boundaries.

One way I’ve done this is by traveling to places I’ve never gone before. One thing I used to do was travel to the same city, stay at the same hotel chain, and eat at the same restaurants. I was traveling, but I was traveling in my comfort zone.

I felt like I was missing something and traveling wasn’t the same. Once, I noticed that it was because traveling had become too comfortable to me, I decided to switch it up.

I started going to different countries and interacting with diverse cultures and people. It forced me to adapt to my surroundings and learn how to fit in. I wanted to enjoy my trip so I got past my limitations and started to enjoy traveling again.

Like it did for me, traveling can help you to change what you consider your comfort zone until nothing intimidates you and you start to thrive from the curve balls life throws at you.

4. It helps you read people.

As I mentioned before, I would travel to different countries and interact with people whose language I wasn’t well-versed in. To communicate more efficiently, I learned to read their body language, facial expressions, hand gestures and tone, anything that would help me understand what they were trying to tell me.

Learning to read people is a critical skill to have when conducting business, especially if you have international clients who have different social norms.

5. Travel can grow your network.

Whether you’re traveling for business or personal reasons, you can meet new people and make meaningful connections. I’ve gone to conferences and meet colleagues and potential clients. But I’ve also built relationships with people who wanted to learn more about traveling.

Some of them turned out to be great friends and years later, we still occasionally chat and if I’m nearby, we’ll meet up. It’s no guarantee that you’ll meet lifelong friends on your trip, but it’s possible to spread the word of your business and help others or learn from them.

Tickets to Brazil Are in High Demand as Visa Restrictions End

Travelers are scrambling to get plane tickets to Brazil now that the country has erased the need for a visa.Australian, Canadian, Japanese and American tourists will no longer need a visa starting June 17, 2019, and a new Kayak survey revealed searches for flights have shown double-digit increases. The highest increase was registered in Australia (36 percent), followed by the United States (31 percent), Canada (19 percent) and Japan (4 percent).

The end of the visa requirement came about as part of a decree from the Brazilian government. Visitors arriving with valid passports and intending to visit Brazil for leisure and business tourism, artistic or sports activities or exceptional situations of national interest are able to visit without a visa for 90 days, extendable for another 90 days.

Travelers don’t have to wait to visit Brazil, however. The country relaxed visa restrictionslast year, and electronic visas are easily obtainable.

When the move to the electronic visa process was made last year, there was a similar push from these four countries, boosting arrivals to Brazil. In 2018, the country received more than 715,000 tourists from Australia, Japan, the U.S. and Canada, a number 15 percent higher than in 2017.

Specifically, the U.S. sent more than 500,000 tourists to Brazil in 2018, an increase of 13 percent. More than 71,000 Canadians headed to the country, 45 percent more than in 2017. Australia recorded a growth of 25 percent, and Japan, 5 percent.

With America having suffered a pretty harsh winter from coast to coast, would-be wanderers are rejoicing as the weather warms and vacation venues beckon with stellar offerings. In fact, industry growth this travel season is indubitably (and understandably) poised to impress as outlined in the Skift Global Travel Economy Outlook 2019 and numerous other reports. But as the hospitality trade has exponentially upped their game across the board, it’s getting much more difficult to hone in on travel destinations and service purveyors worthy of our hard-earned dollars, and, more importantly, treasured downtime. With that in mind, here’s an apt assortment of travel options and travel purveyors that’ll pamper you with a purpose.

Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

First, we’ll start all the way out in the west most United States—a journey across the Pacific Ocean—to the uber-fabulous Fairmont Kea Lani Maui, Hawaii’s only all-suite and villa luxury resort. They’re currently offer discerning travelers an expertly curated and indulgent itinerary featuring Maui’s most luxurious experiences through its “Luxe Villa Adventure” package. This elite bundle features a sumptuous stay in the resort’s exclusive collection of residentially appointed two- and three-bedroom private villas boasting 1,800 and 2,200 square feet of living space, each replete with the creature comforts of home. On my recent excursion on this three-bedroom nautical beauty, I nibbled on cheese and charcuterie as a pod of migrating whales escorted our ship out to sea for a memorable Maui sunset.

Speaking of Hawaiian vacations, I do want to make a quick mention about Hawaiian Airlines because they’re really going above and beyond with incredible guest services, making them my favorite way to fly to Hawai’i. Beyond the engaging and warm hospitality they are known for at each touchpoint, once on board a Hawaiian Airlines aircraft, their signature in-flight hospitality engages throughout experience with a friendly celebration of the culture, people and Aloha Spirit of the Hawaiian Islands. On a recent flight I was nary in my seat for a few minutes when I was offered a delicious guava mimosa from an extremely affable flight attendant.

In striving for excellence, this airline shares the tastes of Hawai’i as the only domestic carrier to serve complimentary meals to guests in all cabins on transpacific flights that are designed exclusively by Chef Lee Anne Wong. Definitely a unique and tasty benefit there! In the first class cabin, a representative, amply-portioned brunch menu includes the infamous pre-departure signature Mai Tai cocktail; beverage service with Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts; a first course of seasonal fresh fruits and warm croissant with butter and jam; a main course of Shiitake mushroom, sundried tomato and cheese quiche; and a dessert course of chocolate hazelnut cheesecake offered with coffee, tea and liqueurs. Speaking or first class, Hawaiian Airlines’ unique “Bid-Up” program allows guests to bid at their discretion for first class upgrades, starting around $245—a bid I successfully “won” at that low starting rate for what was a highly enjoyable voyage.

A touch northward in San Diego lies the incomparable Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Next, we’ll trek to the most southern city in California where the InterContinental San Diego hotel awaits. From my corner suite, I was able to enjoy the glow of fiery SoCal sunsets because all of the chic and sophisticated accommodations here feature full-length, floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the bay—oft also with the famous San Diego skyline and iconic Coronado bridge in view.

Location-wise, this property is perfectly situated for those wanting to get out-and-about on the town. The InterContinental San Diego Hotel is just steps away from the Embarcadero, which docks both the famed USS Midway and Maritime Museum of San Diego, plus several cruise ship ports. It’s also close to downtown hotspots, including Little Italy, the San Diego Convention Center, Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village and more. The adjoined Sugar Factory retail and café offers over 500 types of candy, a gelato bar, house-made doughnuts and a vast array of other tantalizing treats. In the evening the Sugar Factory American Brasserie is a must, as this glamorous, high-energy restaurant is known for extravagant dishes and drinks like Rainbow Sliders, Insane Milkshakes and Smoking Candy Goblets. If you’re seeking a fun-filled, action-packed holiday with or without the kids, few if any American locales can compare with the City of Anaheim in Orange County, California. According to Visit Anaheim (VisitAnaheim.org), the official destination organization for the locale, this storied city welcomes 24.2 million annual visitors and is home to over 150 hotels—from AAA Four Diamond luxury hotels and trendy boutique properties to brand new, all-suite family-friendly hotels—and everything in between.  Speaking of families … while it’s no surprise that millennials love to “do it for the ‘gram,” when it comes to travel buddies it’s millennials’ desire to travel with Grandpa and Grandma that may surprise you. According to a new survey from Visit Anaheim, multigenerational vacations are top-of-mind with travelers when it comes to reliving memories, while also creating new ones, with the next generation. The survey, conducted by OnePoll for Visit Anaheim, polled a sample of 1,000 Americans and found that millennial respondents (aged 25-34) lead the category when it comes to wanting more multigenerational trips, coming in at a whopping 83 percent.

According to the survey, fully two thirds (66 percent) of respondents have traveled with three or more generations of their family, making vacations with grandparents, their adult children and grandchildren, a travel trend with no signs of slowing down. In fact, the majority plan on taking more extended family trips. Nostalgia is apparently one of the main reasons the trend keeps growing. Many parents and grandparents love reliving memories. The majority (56 percent) “strongly agree” that multigenerational trips are more special when visiting somewhere their parents or grandparents have been before, and 53 percent report being “very happy” when they take trips to places they’ve previously been with their parents or children.
